Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART)

Bytes of Byron does not use mercury amalgam fillings. Mercury (Hg) is a chemical element that is toxic to humans. We use mercury-free white fillings instead. We offer mercury filling removals, that are performed in a very careful manner that focuses on the safe disposal of mercury debris. Great care is taken to prevent the patient from swallowing any of the particles. We isolate the filling to be removed, position a rubber dam inside the mouth, and use high-volume suction to remove any toxic particles as they are released.

Once the old filling has been removed, we take special care to safely dispose of the toxic debris. We employ a unique suction system that automatically separates the mercury debris by trapping it in a filter before it ever reaches the sink drain. This technology is the new standard in eco-dentistry and effectively removes 99% of the mercury. It eradicates mercury poisoning and protects our patients.

Dr. Leigh Bayliss

Originally from Nottingham in the United Kingdom, Dr. Bayliss graduated from Liverpool University. He migrated to Australia in 2009 and subsequently ran a successful private practice in Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. Dr. Bayliss has always been a staunch advocate of amalgam-free dentistry and treating patients with a holistic approach; assessing, correcting and preventing underlying causes of dental disease.

His philosophy fits in perfectly with Byron’s first eco-dentist which is focused on using materials that optimise patient health whilst having the least impact on our beautiful environment. He is experienced in all areas of general dentistry, from simple fillings to Orthodontics, but also has a keen interest in cosmetic dentistry, helping patients achieve their ideal aesthetic result.

Dr. Bayliss’s other passionate pursuits include sailing, surfing, and diving; any activity that involves the ocean. He is also an avid traveller and enjoys immersing himself in other cultures and experiencing the fabulous diversity that exists throughout the world.

Dr. Cristian Dunker

Born in Brazil, I've been practicing dentistry since 2003, I have a special interest periodontics, aesthetic and complex prosthetic cases. I graduated in Dentistry in 2003 and completed several courses in oral rehabilitation, cosmetic dentistry and prosthodontics, which give me confidence to deal with the most complex cosmetic procedures. In 2018 I concluded the process to become a general dentist in Australia.

Today I'm pleased to work with at Bytes of Byron Dental, with Mauro and his great team. I'm calm and prefer long-term relationships. I'm used to treating patients who fear dental treatment, and I'm also used to waking up these patients after finishing procedures!I believe that trust must be built between dentist and patient, and takes time to achieve it.

I'm a proud father of two lovely kids, and I enjoy investing my time with my family.
Another joy is to treat my patients, change their life with the best treatment I can provide.

Caitlin Wilkie - Oral Health Therapist

I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Oral Health Health. Since then I have been working full time as an Oral Heath Therapist.

Prior to this i worked for more that eight years as a dental assistant, which has essentially formed the foundation of my dental career. Highlights of my dental experience so far include volunteering in the Northern Territory, participating in children's dental therapy and oral health promotion services in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

I really enjoy treating children and believe that education and health promotion is vital from a young age. Outside of work i love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy being active, being outdoors, travelling, snowboarding and spending quality time at the beach.
